2020 Census: Address Canvassing Operation

Introducing Cheryl Scheetz and Deborah Gartrell

First, let’s introduce our local ladies canvassing for the 2020 Census.

From Cheryl Scheetz, “I would like to inform anyone who may be concerned that there are two of us ladies that are canvassing Somervell County for the US CENSUS BUREAU. We have an identification badge with our photos hanging around our neck and signs in our windows. We are verifying addresses for the forms to be sent out next year. Please let your neighbors know we are in the area. We have both lived and worked here for many many decades.

My name is Cheryl Scheetz and she is Deborah Gartrell

Thank you for your assistance in making our jobs as simple as possible.”

Aug. 12, 2019 — Today, the U.S. Census Bureau briefed the media on the launch of address canvassing, the first major field operation of the 2020 Census. Address canvassing improves and refines the Census Bureau’s address list of households nationwide, which is necessary to deliver invitations to respond to the census. The address list plays a vital role in ensuring a complete and accurate count of everyone living in the United States.

“The Census Bureau is dedicated to ensuring that we are on track, and ready to accomplish the mission of the 2020 Census,” said Census Bureau Director Steven Dillingham. “We have made many improvements and innovations over the past decade, including better technologies for canvassing neighborhoods and developing complete and updated address listings and maps.”

2020 Census: Launch of Address Canvassing

Purpose of Address Canvassing

The Address Canvassing Operation serves two purposes:

  1. Deliver a complete and accurate address list and spatial database for enumeration.
  2. Determine the type and address characteristics for each living quarter.

This operation implements methods to improve and refine the U.S. Census Bureau’s address list in advance of the 2020 Census. The Census Bureau needs the address and physical location of each living quarter in the United States and Puerto Rico to conduct and tabulate the census. An accurate list ensures that residents will be invited to participate in the census and that the census counts residents in the correct location.
