Slow Down, Glen Rose: It’s Better to Arrive Late Than Not at All |
Here in Glen Rose, we share the same highway lifelines every day - Highway 67 and 144. After yet another head-on collision, it’s time for a friendly reminder from neighbor to neighbor: slow down, leave earlier, and resist the urge to pass on the double stripes. Those lines are there for a reason: because you can’t see what’s coming over that hill or around that bend.
It’s still the law: “An operator may not drive on the left side of the roadway in a no-passing zone or on the left side of any pavement striping designed to mark a no-passing zone.” That’s Texas Transportation Code § 545.055. Those double yellow lines aren’t suggestions, they’re lifesavers.
The Real Reason to Leave Earlier
Many of us speed or take risky passes not because we’re reckless, but because we’re running late. If we left five or ten minutes earlier, we wouldn’t feel the need to take chances. That extra bit of margin could be the difference between life and death. Not just for us, but for the person coming the other way who never saw it coming.
Head-on collisions are among the deadliest kinds of crashes. In 2024 alone, 617 people were killed in head-on crashes in Texas. It’s heartbreaking to think that many of those lives could have been spared by a few extra minutes of patience.
The Distraction Problem
Speeding isn’t the only danger. Distraction is just as deadly. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) reports that nearly one in five crashes on Texas roads in 2024 were caused by distracted driving, leading to 373 deaths and 2,587 serious injuries. On a national scale, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recorded 3,275 people killed in 2023 in crashes involving distracted drivers. That means 8% of all fatal crashes in the U.S. were caused by someone not paying attention.
Phones, music, food, kids - all good things in the wrong moment - can take your eyes, hands, or mind off the road. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says it plainly: “Nine people in the United States are killed every day in crashes that are reported to involve a distracted driver.”
A Simple Challenge
Bringing It Home
Imagine our small-town news filled with good stories: local games, community events, and new businesses, instead of another accident report. Together, we can make our roads safer simply by planning ahead, driving patiently, and respecting the laws designed to protect us. So tomorrow morning, when you head out on 67 or 144, take a deep breath, leave a little earlier, and keep those wheels between the lines. The people who love you—and the families you pass—will thank you for it.

Tigers Capture 10th Straight District Championship |
The Glen Rose Tiger football team continues to show why they’re one of the premier programs in Texas high school football. On Halloween night, the Tigers dominated Benbrook 53-14, securing their 10th straight District Championship, and they did it with one game still left in district play.
From the opening kickoff, Glen Rose took control and never looked back. The offense executed with precision, while the defense delivered big stops that kept Benbrook on its heels all night long. It was a complete team effort that showcased the Tigers’ trademark toughness and discipline.
This year’s title marks a full decade of district dominance for Glen Rose; a streak built on hard work, leadership, and consistency from both players and coaches. Each season, the Tigers find new ways to rise to the challenge, backed by an entire community that takes pride in their success.
But even with another gold ball secured, the Tigers aren’t looking past their next opponent. They’ll close out district play Thursday night (not Friday) against Dunbar. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Handley Stadium in Fort Worth.
Congratulations to the Glen Rose Tigers on clinching their 10th straight district title. The job’s not finished yet, but it’s clear the tradition of excellence is alive and well in Glen Rose. |
Lady Tigers Volleyball Wraps Up a Strong Season |
The Glen Rose Lady Tigers volleyball season came to an end on October 30th after falling to Liberty in the first round of the playoffs, three games to none.
Despite the early playoff exit, the Lady Tigers have plenty to be proud of after finishing the season with an impressive 27-17 overall record. Under first-year head coach Kelsi Chavez, the team showed tremendous growth, grit, and teamwork - setting the stage for an exciting future for Glen Rose Volleyball.
Junior Henley Watkins etched her name in the record books this year, breaking a school record and highlighting the team’s determination and hard work throughout the season.
This season also marked the final run for several dedicated seniors who have given their all to the program. The court will not be the same without four-year letterman Alex Arrington, whose leadership and steady presence have been invaluable over the years.
A heartfelt thank-you goes out to all of our seniors: Avery Guptill, Ashtyn Dodson, Tatum Brooks, Kalie Paxton, Reagan Lindsey, and Alex Arrington. Your effort, passion, and commitment have left a lasting legacy on Glen Rose Volleyball. We wish each of you the very best in your next chapter. You’ll always be part of the Lady Tiger family. |
